The production of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey began in 2008, when Peter Jackson and his production company, WingNut Films, acquired the rights to adapt Tolkien's novel into a trilogy of films. Jackson had previously directed The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was a critical and commercial success, and was eager to return to Middle-earth.
